CHILD MODELING FAQ

A lot of parents want to know how to get their child started in modeling and print work and have a lot of questions about this. Most parents don't know where to start. As a top child model photographer and top kids headshot photographer in LA I thought I would answer some FAQ about child modeling.
CHILD MODELING FAQ: 1. MY CHILD IS TALL. WOULD THEY BE A GOOD MODEL? Height for child models...ages 12 and under is not the same requirement as the teen and adult modeling industry. Typically models are known to be tall and thin because the clothing hangs well on a tall, thin body. In contrast, with child modeling, there can be a demand for certain clothing sizes, or ethicities but not a demand for tall kids. There is however a demand for unique features such as lots of freckles, a tooth gap, big beautiful afro's, stunning eyes and in general beautiful children. If you look at a Ralph Lauren ad with kids or a GAP kids ad, you will usualy see a beautiful child or a very interesting look. Long red curls, great smiles etc., are features you might see in those campaigns. You can see all different body types...from very thin to plus size but for the most part you will see unique looks and beautiful features with child models.
2. HOW DO I GET INTRODUCED TO A CHILD MODELING AGENCY? There are several ways to be introduced to a child modeling agency. You can submit photos thru their websites, get connected thru a friend who's child models, be scouted, or be referred by industry people such a talent manager or a headshot photographer who photographs child model headshots.
Getting a referral by a child model photographer is a very common way to get introduced to a child modeling agency because a top child headshot photographer
will have relationshops with talent agents. A top child modeling headshot photographer can steer you to talent agents, give you a referral or help you to submit your child's new modeling headshots to the agent. So make sure to get your child's modeling headshots done with a top headshot photographer who specializes in kids as well as one who has photographed many child models.
3. MY CHILD IS SHY BUT LOVES BEING PHOTOGRAPHED AND POSING. IS SHE/HE A GOOD CANDIDATE TO BECOME A CHILD MODEL? That depends. I would say the more outgoing a child is, the easier it will be for them since there are many adults on a photoshoot and those adults may be interacting with your child. Also, personality can be a big factor in casting because it's easier to work with a child who is vibrant and playful rather then introverted or a bit fearful. However, some kids can be on the quiet side but really shine in front of the camera. I've seen young kids who are quiet and then all of a sudden are so happy when being photographed. I think a key factor is if your child is "interested" and wants to do this. If they really want to do this, and they have a great look, then book a photoshoot for child modeling headshots and see how they do. I worked with many kids who come to me a bit shy or nervous but as we start working together and taking photos, they open up and find out it is not scary, but rather fun. Their confidence will rise the more they do it. Here's some more examples of child model headshots
